We invite you to join us in a show of solidarity on the 5th of November which will mark 15 years of hunger striking by Irom Sharmila (aka the Iron Lady of Manipur) to demand that the Indian government repeal the fascistic AFSPA, or Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
Irom Sharmila’s hunger strike is now the longest running hunger strike in the world. 15 years ago she vowed not to eat, drink, comb her hair or look in a mirror until AFSPA was repealed.
Three days after she began her strike, she was arrested by the police and charged with an “attempt to commit suicide”,she has been repeatedly rearrested and imprisoned since. Nasogastric intubation was forced on her from November 21 in order to keep her alive while under arrest. She has only met her mother once since the start of her hunger strike as seeing her mother’s anguish may break her resolve. She said “The day AFSPA is repealed I will eat rice from my mother’s hand.”
AFSPA is responsible for human rights violations in North East and Jammu &Kashmir and is used to cover up hundreds of killings, rapes, disappearances and torture cases by the Indian Army.
No justice has been meted out to the murderers, as under AFSPA, security personnel are free to shoot to kill, with unchecked powers.
To mark Irom Sharmila’s 15 years of hunger strike and salute her spirit to fight for this cause as well as raise awareness of this revolutionary woman we are joining with our comrades in India who have called a nationwide protest to repeal AFSPA.
We are asking for people to attend a solidarity vigil and symbolic fast outside the Indian Consulate at 344 St Kilda Road, Melbourne at 12:00 Noon on Thursday the 5th of November.
