12.10.17: Piotr Riabov (Пётр Рябов), one of the most famous historians of anarchism in Russia, a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Moscow University of Pedagogy, author of books, was arrested for his participation in a conference on the history of the anarchist movement.
The arrest took place on October 9th in Belarus, where Piotr went to give lectures. The police invaded the conference and arrested the historian and more than twenty people who had come to the conference. All were taken to the police station and interrogated. The police seized the books and other printed material that Piotr was to use during the conference. On that day, all were released after the interrogations.
But on October 10th, Piotr was arrested against on the train when he returned to Moscow. He was tried on October 11th and sentenced to six days in prison. He was accused of vandalism and spreading extremist material. The magazine Freedom or Death (No. 6, 2007) was considered extremist. As a sign of protest he began a hunger strike today.
Piotr Riabov (Пётр Рябов), along with Vadim Damier, is the leading contemporary historian of anarchism in Russia.
He needs international solidarity and urgent support.
